In Feng Shui's Eight Mansions system, every person has a Kua number - a single digit between 1 and 9 (never 5) derived from your birth year and gender. That number places you in either the East Group or West Group, determines your four auspicious directions and four inauspicious ones, and shapes how you interact with the spaces you inhabit. It's not about what you feel when you walk into a room. It's about what directions support your energy and which ones work against it when you sleep, sit, and face the world.

How it works

Enter your birth year and gender. The calculator applies the traditional Kua formula and returns your number (1-9, excluding 5 which remaps to 2 or 8). You'll see your East or West group classification, your four auspicious directions (Sheng Chi, Tien Yi, Nien Yen, Fu Wei) with their meanings, and your four directions to avoid.

Understanding your result

The four auspicious directions each carry a distinct quality: Sheng Chi governs wealth and growth - ideal facing direction for your desk or front door. Tien Yi governs health - best direction to sleep, head toward. Nien Yen governs relationships and family - useful for the bed's position relative to the door. Fu Wei governs personal development and stability. The four inauspicious directions range from mildly unfavorable to what tradition calls 'Total Loss' - the direction most strongly opposed to your energy.

Frequently asked questions

What year does Feng Shui use for the calculation?

The Chinese solar year, which starts around February 4th (Li Chun). If you were born before February 4th, your Feng Shui Kua year is the previous Western calendar year.

What if I can't face my good direction at my desk - is my space ruined?

Feng Shui works in layers. Kua directions are one input among many. Facing your Sheng Chi direction is ideal; not achieving it doesn't negate the space. Start with what you can adjust.

Why is there no Kua 5?

The number 5 is the center - it doesn't correspond to a compass direction in the same way. Males born with a raw 5 are remapped to Kua 2 (Earth energy); females to Kua 8, following classical Eight Mansions tradition.

Is this the same as BaZi or Flying Stars?

No. Kua number is specific to Eight Mansions Feng Shui. BaZi (Four Pillars) is a separate destiny-reading system. Flying Stars (Xuan Kong) is a different spatial mapping method. They can be used together but are distinct.
