About This Widget

Jyotish - the Sanskrit word for the science of light - is the classical Indian system of astrology. It is not the same as Western astrology, and understanding what makes it different is the first step to reading your Vedic chart without confusion.

Sidereal vs. Tropical: Why Your Sign Shifts

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons - Aries begins at the spring equinox regardless of where the stars actually are. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the actual star constellations. Due to a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes, the tropical and sidereal zodiacs have drifted apart by about 23-24 degrees over two thousand years. That gap is called the ayanamsa, and the most widely used calculation is the Lahiri ayanamsa, standardized by the Indian government in 1955.

In practice, this means your Vedic Sun sign is usually one sign earlier than your Western Sun sign. Someone born with the Sun at 10 degrees of tropical Gemini will typically find the Vedic Sun at around 17 degrees of sidereal Taurus. The planets are in different positions. The chart looks and reads differently.

How to Read the North Indian Layout

The D1 Rashi chart appears in the North Indian diamond layout - a grid of twelve boxes representing the twelve houses (Bhavas), with the Lagna (Ascendant) always in the top-center box. Each box carries the number of the Rashi occupying that house.

Start with three things: the Lagna sign (which determines the nature of your physical body and the overall tone of the chart), the Moon sign (Chandra Rashi, which describes your emotional intelligence and the texture of your mind), and where the Sun sits (your Atmakaraka in some traditions, the indicator of your soul's direction). These three together give you 80% of what you need to understand the broad shape of your life from a Jyotish perspective.

What the Planets in Their Rashis Tell You

Each of the nine Grahas - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu - has specific relationships with certain Rashis. When a planet occupies a Rashi it rules (its own sign), it operates with comfort and authority. When it occupies its sign of exaltation, it operates at full strength. When it occupies a sign of debilitation, it is weakened - but that weakness can be neutralized by other factors in the chart, a concept called neecha bhanga (cancellation of debilitation).

Rahu and Ketu are not planets in the physical sense - they are the lunar nodes, the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. They operate as powerful karmic indicators. Rahu in the chart shows where you have insatiable appetite and future-directed karma; Ketu shows where you have past-life mastery and a tendency toward disinterest or detachment.

Each planet's placement in a Nakshatra (one of 27 lunar mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each) adds a further layer of specificity that the full reading explores.
